Phoenix Assurance plc

Major composite insurer founded by a group of sugar manufacturers. Acquisition by Sun Alliance & London in 1984 created the UK's largest composite insurer and saw the disappearance of its corporate identity. Renamed Sun Alliance Linked Life Insurance Co in 1989. In the re-organisation that followed Sun Alliance's merger with the Royal, Phoenix Assurance was resuscitated as a brand for the consolidation of traditional life products.

Royal & Sun Alliance Linked Insurances Limited

Founded by Lloyd's of London to expand into life insurance. Acquired by Royal to increase its presence in the unit-linked market and renamed Royal Heritage Life (1986). Renamed Royal & SunAlliance Linked Insurances (1998) and used to consolidate unit-linked operations across the group.

Established as Royal Life Insurance to co-ordinate the life sales activity of the group, which concentrated on low-cost endowments sold through the non-life network. After the merger that created the Royal & Sun Alliance Group, was renamed Royal & Sun Alliance Life & Pensions Limited

After its merger with London Assurance in 1965, Sun Alliance ended its 150 year relationship with Sun Life and established this company to co-ordinate its own life activity, hitherto restricted to life portfolios acquired in takeovers of composites.

Established to distribute pension products through intermediaries, acquired Pioneer Mutual, a traditional provider of funeral benefit policies and childrens’ endowments that was seeking capital to diversify.

Britannic Group plc closed life companies

Alba Life Ltd

Established as Britannia Life by Britannia Building Society on its demutualisation in 1990, operating as a new operation using the premises of FS Assurance, which Britannic BS had acquired. On takeover by Britannic in 1999 Britannia Life was re-formed as Britannic Asset Management, its life portfolio closed to new business and as Alba Life used to consolidate other closed life business it had acquired.

Established by six Birmingham workmen as an industrial life insurer, converted from private to public company in 1981. Embarked on an acquisition spree in the 1990s. In a change of strategy driven by financial difficulties in 2003, it decided to focus on closed life portfolio.

Founded as the Scottish Temperance Life Assurance Co. In 1971, it was the first insurer in the UK to introduce lower premium rates for non-smokers. Demutualised and acquired by Abbey National Building Society in 1991.

Founded with the intention of offering cheaper rates for with- profit policies by recognising that mortality risks in the established life tables were excessively conservative, and delaying bonus allocations until premiums met the sum insured.

Demutualised and acquired by Abbey National in 2001, which planned to develop it as its life protection brand.

Sun Life Assurance Society plc

Established by the Sun Fire Office as an associated company, Sun Life consolidated a number of smaller competitors during the 19th century. It relationship with Sun ended when the latter acquired London Assurance in 1965. Throughout the 1980s the Board fought a battle for control with Liberty Life Association of S Africa, including the introduction of UAP of France as a white knight in 1988. UAP eventually acquired control and merged Sun Life with it non-life subsidiary Provincial Insurance. UAP merged into AXA in 1997.

Winterthur Life (UK) Ltd

The Provident Association of London (1877) was originally a “bond investment company”: door-to-door collectors took weekly contributions towards a capital sum rather than a funeral benefit. By the end of the 19th century, it had converted into an insurance company and was a pioneer of mortgage endowment policies. Acquired by Winterthur in 1995.

Lincoln Benefit Life Co

Established in 1938 as a burial association, incorporating as a life company in 1949. After passing through a number of hands in the late 1970s and early 1980s, it became part of the (then) Sears Roebuck subsidiary Allstate Insurance, which ultimately used it as the producer for third-party distributed life products.
